From ore to refinement
The journey of palladium begins deep underground. Major deposits of this precious metal are found in South Africa, Russia, Canada and the United States. Depending on the depth of the ore, extraction methods include open-pit mining or underground mining in shafts.
Once the ore is mined, it undergoes crushing and beneficiation to separate valuable minerals from waste rock. This is done using a process called flotation, one of the most efficient beneficiation techniques. During flotation, finely crushed ore is treated with special solutions. Particles of certain minerals become wet and sink, while others remain unwetted and float to the surface as foam, allowing the separation of valuable material from waste rock.
To extract palladium from the concentrate, complex metallurgical processes are employed. First, the material is smelted to produce matte – a compound enriched with platinum group metals (PGMs). This is followed by refining, which involves a series of chemical and electrochemical reactions to isolate palladium from a number of elements.
Key refining steps include the separation of PGMs through chlorination or acid dissolution. Palladium is converted into soluble salts, which are then precipitated and reduced to pure metal with a purity of over 99.95%.
Recycling: Closing the loop
When products containing palladium reach the end of their life cycle, what happens to this precious metal? Given its rarity and high value, recycling palladium is essential from both an economic and environmental standpoint.
The first step is the collection of used products. Automotive catalytic converters, electronic components, and dental waste all contain palladium that can be recovered. Specialised facilities handle the collection and initial sorting of these materials.
The recycling process mirrors primary refining but with some differences. Waste materials are crushed and subjected to chemical treatments to dissolve palladium. Hydrometallurgical techniques, including acid leaching and solvent extraction, are used to recover the metal.
The recovered palladium is then purified to the required standards and is ready to re-enter the industrial cycle. This process can be repeated multiple times, reducing the need for new mining and minimising environmental impact.
